Located in the northwest corner of Big Stone County, we consider Prairie Point Farm our own little slice of heaven in 350 acres.
Here, we grow a diverse crop rotation of certified organic alfalfa, barley, oats, field peas, wheat, corn, and soybeans. Acting as a multipurpose workhorse, we employ the use of cover crop mixes to scavange nutrients, reduce erosion, and control weeds after our small grains are harvested in the fall. We are in the process of transitioning our crop acres to organic production.
Thanks to a grant from Lakewinds Organic Field Fund in early 2015, we are able to purchase a feed grinder so that we can provide our animals a non-GMO, antibiotic-free diet from our own farm as well as provide feed for our neighbors in the sustainable agriculture community in Western Minnesota.
Seasonally, our animals rotate between foraging outdoors on pasture and living indoors in a deep-straw bedded environment.
The Berkshire-cross pigs live out of confinement and are never given sub-theraputic antibiotics or growth hormones.
